Rev. James P. McDermott, S.J., Arts ’91, was elected to the Marquette University Board of Trustees in 2003.
He is an associate editor at America Magazine, the national Catholic weekly, in New York.
Originally from the northwest suburbs of Chicago, Father McDermott received his bachelor’s degree in English from Marquette in 1991. He earned a master’s degree in English and American Literature and Languages from Harvard University, and holds a master’s degree in divinity and a licentiate in sacred theology from the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Mass.
As a Jesuit, he has worked and studied at Loyola University Chicago; tutored reading at the Cabrini Green Housing Project in Chicago; taught English, drama and media and drove a school bus at Red Cloud High School on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota; worked with homeless youth in Cambridge; and, most recently, served as associate pastor at Gesu Parish in Milwaukee.
He served as trustee associate at Boston College from 2000 to 2003, and was ordained a Jesuit priest in 2003.
