Ellen B. Rudy is a nationally recognized expert in the field of nursing research. She is currently a Senior Consultant for the National Institute of Health and holds a part-time faculty appointment at Ohio State University. She was dean and professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing from 1991 to 2001. Prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Rudy was with Case Western Reserve University's Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing where she held the Edward J. and Louise Mellen endowed chair in acute care nursing and served as the associate dean for research.

During her tenure at the University of Pittsburgh, the School of Nursing was repeatedly highly ranked in National Institutes of Healthlevels of research funding while simultaneously implementing a strong faculty practice plan. In addition, as a result of her sabbatical, which involved working in the emergency room, Dr. Rudy initiated an award ceremony, Cameos of Caring, for the recognition of excellence in bedside nursing. This award now includes 37 hospitals in the Pittsburgh area and has been implemented in three additional university settings.

Dr. Rudy has been principal investigator on five NIH-funded projects. Early in her research career, her research focused on critical care (endotracheal suctioning, and evaluation of a special care unit for the chronically critically ill) and women's health. More recently, she has studied nurse-managed care in both hospital and clinical settings and has examined the factors that affect patient outcomes. Currently she is involved in a project to evaluate the published research on end-of-life care that has been funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research.

Dr. Rudy has published widely in professional journals and co-authored several textbooks. She served on the editorial boards of three journals, continues to be a presenter at nursing conferences, and has consulted with universities and hospitals around the country.

Dr. Rudy's professional honors include: fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing; the Kidney Foundation's Trustees Award; Ohio State University College of Nursing Outstanding Alumni Award for Excellence; and the Ohio Nurses Association Excellence in Nursing Research Award. Her most recent recognition was being named a "Living Legend" by the American Academy of Nursing. She is a member of numerous professional associations.

Dr. Rudy received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Ohio State University, a master's in public administration from the University of Dayton, a master's in nursing from the University of Maryland, and her Ph.D. in nursing from Case Western Reserve University.
