Classroom life:
“It was probably better than I expected. My friends who went to different colleges talked a lot about the huge classes that they had, and then I came here and it’s that intimate feel. We’re kind of lucky and blessed to have the smaller class sizes where professors do know your names, and they hold you accountable for coming to class.”

Call to priesthood:
“The initial nudge came from our parish priest when I was in the eighth grade. … It just sort of stuck with me. A lot of people that I would meet would say, ‘You know, I saw that in you, but I didn’t realize it.’ So little things kind of kept me on that path.”

Favorite band:
Guster. “I’d like to say I have an eclectic music taste. I’m not a big poppy, twangy country fan or a hip hop fan. But other than that, I can stand just about anything.”

Marquette’s impact:
“It’s changed how I approach the world. It’s made me very conscious of my actions, that everything I do has an effect on other people. It’s taught me not to take for granted what I’ve been given here at Marquette or given as a middle-class white male American.”

Advice for freshman:
“Be open to any possibility that arises. Don’t come in with a strict plan because you’ll either be highly disappointed that it didn’t come through, or you’ll be highly disappointed that you constricted yourself so much that you didn’t get to experience everything that you could have.”

Joe Hancox

Joe

One day, Joe could be a rockin’ priest.

At Marquette, the theology major (yes, Joe has given some thought to entering the priesthood) merged his twin passions for music and faith as a drummer for Campus Crusade and percussionist for University Ministry. When he’s not playing music, he’s listening to it.

“One of the main reasons why I wanted to go to a college in a city was because of the music scene,” he says. “Being here, I’ve realized that there’s more to Milwaukee than just the Rave and Pabst Theatre, but that’s still a big part of my social life — going to concerts, letting loose and just having fun.”

Plenty of other activities keep him busy. He’s the concert co-commissioner for Marquette University Student Government, a resident assistant in Straz Hall, a member of the Hunger Clean-Up Fund-raising Committee and a volunteer for the Urban Ecology Center.

He takes advantage of Marquette’s many spiritual resources, and he’s active in University Ministry as a retreat leader, acolyte and lector. His theology classes —  such as one called Martin, Malcolm, Baldwin and the Church, about the Civil Rights Movement —  have also challenged him to think about faith in a different way.

“My faith has matured a lot, especially this last year,” he says. “The classes I’ve taken have definitely taken me out of my comfort zone, from that idea that the church is the end all, be all. ... We really examine that mentality and in a more reasonable way, try to explain our faith.”
