HAVEN members serve to:
- EDUCATE the campus community about violence and how to work together to maintain a safe, responsive environment;
- INFORM the campus community about university, community, and national resources for preventing and overcoming violence;
- SUPPORT survivors of violence by offering competent, confidential support services and referrals.
Why it matters at Marquette
Issues of sexual violence affect students, faculty, and staff at Marquette University. It is important for all of us in the community to know and understand the impact this violence has on its victims and survivors.
A 2003 informal survey of Marquette students indicated that rates of sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking on Marquette’s campus correspond with national averages:
- 18% of women and 7% of men report having been sexually assaulted.
- 37 % of women and 32% of men report having been a victim of violence in a dating relationship.
- 21% of women and 29% of men report having been a victim of stalking.
It is our hope that our community becomes interested, educated and involved in the fight to stop this violence. As people who believe in the importance of becoming “men and women for others,” we have a responsibility to stand in solidarity with the victims and survivors of interpersonal violence, and help to heal the hearts broken by violence.
